Background to how the event started:

When Fred and Mary Thomas were Mayor and Mayoress of the Takapuna City Council many years ago, Mary arranged a Carols by Candlelight event on the shores of Lake Pupuke by the Takapuna Pumphouse. This event was well attended by local North Shore residents and held in high regard.  The Milford Business Association (MBA) had a relationship with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra (ASO) for the previous 3 years assisting with sponsorship of the ASO Free Family concerts at the Bruce Mason Centre.

With the passing of Mary, the ASO and the MBA thought it would be a fitting memorial to Mary to recreate that family Christmas event with the ASO playing Christmas music at the picturesque lakeside setting of Sylvan Park.

Coincidently, Mary’s son, Peter Thomas, is the conductor and a director of the ASO, and 8 members of the ASO (a voluntary organisation) live in Milford. We see all of us being involved in making this event come to life as a perfect fit.
